Gylly Beach, far away in time – or so it seems now. Our Women’s & Men’s A crews enjoyed a memorable day at Gyllyngavase Beach competing in the ‘Falmouth Sprints’, a series of frenetic 4 minute knockout races culminating in a final, hosted by Falmouth Gig Club
Lining up for our Women’s A crew were Lauren, Sarah Murray, Caroline, Nic, Nicki and Hayla. With the calm assurance and race insights of cox Duncan, the experienced crew surged through the early rounds and qualified for the final. There followed a tight contest with our women achieving a strong 5th behind Mounts Bay, Looe, Helford and Falmouth, having held 3rd place for most of the way around. Special mention to Lauren and Caroline for top work on their A crew debuts.
The Men’s A had their full crew of Tug, Duncan, Worz, Tony, Ben and Alex, admirably led by no-nonsence cox Sarah Murray. They also made it through to the final, where they were just pipped in a thrilling fight with Falmouth B to end up in 4th place behind the two Falmouth crews and Looe. ‘Man of the Match’ was Worz, with crew spokesman Tony remarking on his commanding display of power in midships. Special mention goes to Ben ’Top Knot’ Boudier in what was his final row with this crew as he steps aside for a few months.
The last event of the day was a mixed race of 13 crews and we were able to field two BGC mixed crews, supported by the loan of a gig from Helford and two guest coxes, with our boats coming 2nd and 5th accordingly.
As dusk fell we enjoyed a BBQ and Sean/Tony’s birthday celebrations at Tig & Tim’s Hymer Corrall before joining our Falmouth hosts in town to support the sponsors of the day’s activities.
Thanks very much to Sarah G for towing, Falmouth for hosting us and storing YB, and Helford/our guest coxes for enabling us to field two crews in the mixed race.
